While getting started in golf may seem intimidating, all you need is a few basics, the right people by your side, and you’re all set for a 9-hole round (or an 18-hole round for the brave)!
Here, we offer you a gateway into this world that combines strategy, precision, the great outdoors, and fun with friends, with valuable advice from Vincent, our pro and director of the Mont-Orford Golf Club.
Get ready to discover a world where the calm of lush green fairways meets the excitement of a perfectly executed golf swing. So, ready to take up the challenge and tame the handling of golf?
Choose the right club and the right forsome
Quite wide and without too many obstacles, the Mont-Orford golf club is a good learning ground. Its hilly course will allow you to practice all types of shots while enjoying the view and its more wooded sections.
“A golf course is beautiful! You are outside, in large spaces, there are different textures and then you see far. Here we are lucky, we have a view of the mountain and the unevenness of the region” shares Vincent who has also started playing on this same ground!
We therefore advise you to take a few short breaks and look into the distance, especially at hole #12, when you come out of the woods and the vast, green terrain unfolds before your eyes.
Pay particular attention when you cross #5 and #7, or at hole #15, once on the green, turn around, the mountain is right there!
A 9-hole course at golden hour
First of all, we advise to start with a 9-hole, you will meet enough challenges without getting too tired. It is also preferable to book a departure after 3 p.m., when the field is less busy. You will be quieter and moreover after 4:30 p.m., it is cheaper!
We also advise to ideally have at least one person at a certain level, this will help the fluidity of your game.
Do not hesitate to play according to the principle of the best ball (playing Vegas), which simply consists of bringing your ball to the best placed ball in your foursome.
And finally, Vincent is categorical on the question, to start well, you have to surround yourself well! By bringing together patient and indulgent people with whom you will enjoy spending a few hours in company, this will greatly facilitate your initiation.

Beginner's gear
Now is the time to bring out the old golf set lying around in your grandfather's shed! "There's nothing better than an 80s golf bag found in a garage sale to play your first shots" says Vincent, who as a teacher saw many first shots!
As a beginner, you can make do with a selection of basic equipment: a driver, irons 5 to 9, a wedge and a putter will be more than enough. After all, everything else is performance. To save you the hassle, you will find everything you need in our rental bags at the golf club shop.
Driver
The driver is a #1 wood, used from the tee to send the ball as far down the fairway as possible. It offers a combination of power and distance. It is recognized by its length and a larger and lighter head.
Iron
Irons feature a metal head and are numbered 1 through 9. The higher the number, the higher the angle of the head and the higher your ball will go, but less far. It's up to you to assess your distance from the green!
Putter
The putter is designed with a flat head and a face perpendicular to the path of the stroke. It is used to roll the ball over short distances with maximum precision when close to the hole (on the green).
Vincent Trudeau's pro tips
Give time to develop your talent. Yes yes, the art of golf can be mastered with a little patience and the tips that Vincent shares with you below.
Golf is a sport that requires precision, concentration and feeling! And this feeling, you have to go live it on the ground. Knowing all this, nothing prevents us from quickly going through the advice of pro, question of starting on the right foot.
The driver on a starting tee
Stance: Your shoulders and feet should be in a straight line, and the ball should be positioned in line with your front foot.
The motion: The swing is made with your front arm (left arm for right-handers), and you must rotate your shoulders to complete the follow-through. The idea is to drive through the ball along the ground rather than trying to hit it: imagine driving a nail into an imaginary wall!
The irons on the fairway
Place the ball between your feet. Since it’s right on the ground, you should focus on accuracy rather than power.
The putter, once on the green
Putting is much harder than mini-putt! It requires a lot of precision because the green is more sensitive. We recommend focusing 80% of your concentration on power (distance) and 20% on direction (the line); that way, your ball will always end up a little closer to the hole!
Also, the swing is different here. The body doesn’t move; it’s only the arms that make a pendulum-like motion.
It's not more complicated than that in the end, the goal is to have fun. Gather the elements important to you, sun, beers and friends and you're off to a great time! And as you discover the pleasure of hitting the ball well, you will refine your techniques.
"It's a sport that makes you completely disconnect, you leave your cell phone in your bag and you find yourself outside with friends, that kind of disconnection no longer exists"
Let's go for the summer! Shall we meet at the clubhouse?
